What is Antenatal care?

Antenatal care, sometimes called pregnancy care or maternity care is the care given by health professionals or medical experts to the pregnant ones during their pregnancy.

The main goal of antenatal care is to regularly monitor and promote the well-being of both the mother and the unborn baby, throughout pregnancy.

How often should I have antenatal visits?

As per the guidelines of WHO, it is recommended to schedule at least a minimum of 4 visits to your health professionals for antenatal care. It is always better to have more regular check-ups, to ensure the best and easiest possible pregnancy period and delivery experience one can have.

What tests are performed during antenatal care?

The routine tests during antenatal care are blood pressure checks, urine tests, blood tests, and ultrasound scans.

Can I continue working during pregnancy?

It is considered healthy for most women to continue working, but in specific cases the gynaecologist may recommend otherwise, based on the nature of work and the progress of the pregnancy.

What care do health professionals provide during antenatal visits?

The health professionals will discuss health concerns, or lifestyle changes, and any new symptoms that you might have started to experience during your every visit. We recommend that you openly discuss anything related to pregnancy, even minor changes, symptoms, or uneasiness that might impact your health or the health of your unborn baby. They will also help you to keep updating your birth plan accordingly.

Is it normal to feel anxious about childbirth?

Yes, it is very common for pregnant ones to feel anxious about the whole birthing process or delivering a baby. We recommend you discuss them with your health professionals during your antenatal care visits. They are well trained professionals to provide the required support and reassurances to the pregnant ones.

How does antenatal care benefit my baby?

Your health professionals will assess the information you provide to them, and all test results conducted during these visits, that will help them with an early detection of any potential issues, and they will ensure timely intervention for the betterment of the unborn babies’ health.
