How should I prepare for a semen analysis?

The Do’s and Don’ts are as follows -

  • Do not ejaculate for 2-7 days before submitting the sample for the test.
  • Consult your doctor and avoid any medications that might impact your test results.
  • Maintain a healthy diet, avoid consumption of caffeine and alcohol, for at least 2 days before submitting the sample.
  • Drink loads of water as it impacts the viscosity of the semen.
Should I urinate before the semen sample collection?

You may be asked to urinate and wash your hands and penis before the collection of your semen sample, so as to not contaminate the sample with any bacteria from your skin.

Can I use a lubricant for collecting the sample?

No. You may not use any lubricants or even saliva for collecting semen samples because they could harm your sperm and hence the results may be inaccurate.

What if my semen analysis results are abnormal?

Abnormal results don’t mean you are totally infertile. There are still good chances of parenthood with the help of ART methods. We recommend you consult an experienced fertility specialist near you to get guidance.

Does semen analysis hurt?

The semen analysis is a non-invasive procedure and hence painless. The tests are done on the semen sample collected from you in a sterile container, through masturbation. So, there is no need to worry about any kind of pain.
